As an introduction to the 3D animation pipeline, I designed, modeled, and animated the character G’raf and the environment surrounding him using Maya, Zbrush, Substance Painter, and After Effects. The story conveyed in this short gives a look into his thought process through timing, motion, and sound, that helps the audience understand his frame of mind during the school day and the way he copes with ridicule through drawing. While the 3D animation pipeline proved fascinating, I felt the most fulfilled and creatively engaged through the character, scene and story development, as opposed to the actual art of animation.
While originally planned to be a much longer short, due to time constraints and hardware capabilities, I resorted to condensing the initial script and storyboard into its essential storytelling elements. To convey the story with these new constraints, I set about to do much more with audio storytelling and design - through music, sound effects, light, and texture. Below are a few selected animation tests from the story of G’raf.
